Prado trap leaks Toyota China has trouble

“My car has been put in the 4S store for half a year. I just want to let the Toyota manufacturer give a relevant standard, but the problem has not been solved yet.” On February 29, 2012, Mr. Shi told the Investigative reporter .

Mr. Shi’s car was imported from Toyota Prado. In March of last year, the car was sent to a Toyota 4S shop in Beijing for maintenance. In early June, the car could not be started. After testing, the 4S shop thought that the battery was damaged and the battery needed to be replaced. In September, the car could not start again. The 4S shop thought that the car had leaked electricity, but changed the leakage standard several times. Therefore, Mr. Shi requested 4S shop to provide the dark current value standard of the car. However, after several consultations, neither the 4S store nor the Toyota manufacturer provided this standard.

In order to safeguard his own interests, Mr. Shi was parked in the 4S shop in September 2011, demanding that the 4S store and Toyota China give corresponding standards. However, in the past six months, the two sides have still not reached a consensus. "In the meantime, I mailed more than 20 letters to the Toyota China and Toyota Japan headquarters to explain the problem. Only postage and translation costs exceeded 5,000 yuan."

In response, the "Investor" reporter called the relevant person in charge of the 4S store. He said that this matter is being communicated by the consumer association and it is not convenient to express opinions.

The reporter interviewed the Toyota China Hotline twice as Mr. Shi’s family members and reporters. Their responses were “waiting for the Consumer Association’s handling” and “contact you later”. However, as of press deadline, the Toyota headquarters did not respond to the hotline.

In fact, in the Chinese market, it is not uncommon for the phenomenon of leakage of Toyota vehicles. In March 2010, "China Securities Journal" published a article titled "Toyota Motor: The Camry", which reported that the Camry car also had a leakage phenomenon that caused the car to not start properly. Leakage problems in such models as Crown and Highlander are often mentioned by owners in forums.

Toyota's China "Trouble"

Mr. Shi's Toyota Prado 4.0 Middle Edition is a model for exporting to the Middle East and was purchased at the end of 2008. On March 27th, 2011, Stone regularly drove to a 4S shop in Beijing for maintenance. After about 2 months, the vehicle could not start up, so he was advised to send it to the 4S shop for normal charging. On June 5, the car could not be started again and was worked. The staff informed that this inspection was complicated and took 5 to 8 hours, but after half an hour, the 4S shop called to inform Mr. Shi that the battery was damaged.

4S shop recommends replacing the battery. “Service personnel said that there is a customer suggestion at the Toyota headquarters. After purchasing the vehicle for 3 years or so, after traveling 2 to 30,000 kilometers, it is recommended that customers replace the battery.” Mr. Shi replaced the battery. But that night, he specifically called the Toyota (China) headquarters hotline and was told that there was no such proposal.

On September 6, the car failed to start for the third time. 4S shop staff to check whether the battery and car leakage, but when the owner again to the store to mention the car, they found the car was dismantled in many places.

Mr. Shi is very puzzled about this. “One is why the 4S shop dismantled the car without the owner’s permission. The second is how much the car's dark current value standard is, because the store has given different standards: 10 mA. And 20 Ma."

That night, Mr. Shi complained about the maintenance situation to the Toyota (China) headquarters hotline. “After learning of the complaint, the 4S shop promised to replace the new battery, repair the leakage problem, and promised that the current value of the warranty period does not exceed 20 mA, and the value is stable,” said Mr. Shi.

"But during the maintenance process, the current value has been between 30 and 50 milliamperes. The service personnel could not reduce the current value to below 20 milliamps, and changed the standard to 50 milliamperes." Later, Mr. Shi called Toyota repeatedly. China headquarters hotline has not received an answer.

Later, Mr. Shi repeatedly sent letters to Toyota China headquarters and Toyota Japan headquarters, and even included interviews with representatives of Toyota China. However, they did not receive current standards for the car. Shi said that during this period, Toyota China gave relevant instructions. The explanation shows that “If the dark current value of the vehicle described in the manual provided by Toyota to the dealer is within the reference range of 10 to 50 mA, there is no problem with the use of the vehicle”. However, Mr. Shi questioned because the explanation also emphasized that “the dark current value of different vehicles is not the same, and did not give me the dark current value of my car, they did not answer”.

In this regard, Han Lu, the deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Association of Automobile Engineers, told the “Investor Daily” reporter that the configuration of each car is different, and the dark current value is also different, but each car should have a certain standard and be carried out at the factory. Appropriate testing. Car manufacturers generally do not specifically explain the dark current value of a car, but if consumers demand to know, manufacturers have an obligation to explain.

Mr. Shi’s attitude is very clear. “I want a standard.”

Toyota's big problem Toyota encountered only minor problems in China, and it encountered major trouble in the United States.

According to Reuters, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has begun preliminary investigations in response to consumer complaints about Toyota car doors.

NHTSA said that six consumers complained that the 2007 Toyota Camry sedan and the RAV4 crossover SUV caught fire on the driver's side door. The survey involved about 830,000 vehicles and has not yet been recalled, but there may be a need for a recall in the future.

In the NHTSA document, the agency described it as follows: "Based on the available information, it appears that the flame originally came from the control switch of the power window on the driver's side door."

Toyota said on February 7th that it had received the Initial Evaluation Summary for the 2007 Camry and RAV4, but had not received any request notice from NHTSA and would wait for further news from NHTSA.

The Camry and RAV4 are also popular models in China. To this end, the "Investor" reporter called the China Press Spokesman for Toyota, Liu Peng, saying that "the matter is not known to the matter, but cars currently sold in China do not have quality and safety issues."

In fact, Toyota Motor has frequently recalled quality defects in the past two years. In March last year, international rating agency Standard & Poor's downgraded Japan’s auto manufacturing giant Toyota’s credit rating from “AA” to “AA-”. S&P explained that Toyota was “downgraded” because the company’s “profitability is still weak and the pace of recovery is expected to be slower than its Japanese competitors”. From the end of 2009 to 2010, Toyota recalled more than 10 million cars worldwide, and its reputation and operating performance suffered serious losses. In January and February last year alone, Toyota recalled 1.7 million cars and 2.4 million cars globally.

Frequent quality problems have caused this former world's first car company to suffer a crisis of confidence. In 2011, Toyota sold 7.95 million vehicles worldwide, down 6% year-on-year, including 1.645 million vehicles sold in the United States, a year-on-year decline of 6.7%. Although Toyota has consistently claimed that the decline in sales in 2011 was mainly due to earthquakes and exchange rates, industry experts believe that Toyota’s “recall door” incident has played a role in promoting the significance of its “No. 1” throne. The United States as the largest market outside Toyota, the investigation of the United States NHTSA caused Toyota's uneasiness.

However, Cui Dongshu, a well-known automotive expert, believes that this incident should not have much impact on Toyota. More than half a month has passed since the incident. The NHTSA of the United States did not give any further explanation on the matter, indicating that this incident is not as serious as it seems.

As the largest automaker in Japan, Toyota is able to rank high in the world auto industry for a long time, and itself shows that its product quality is exceptional. However, due to abandoning the “intensive farming” management model in recent years, it is an indisputable fact that product quality has declined.

Insiders pointed out that Toyota's rapid development while its management model is changing, the quality control system is not as strict as before. Cui Dongshu believes that Toyota Motor can not abandon its quality management model, continue to strengthen communication with consumers and restore its good social image.
