The world's first non-volatile optical storage device was born

The good news came from an international team of research scientists at Oxford University in the UK, Muenster University in Germany, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in France and materials scientists at the University of Exeter in the UK who developed the world's first or long-term storage Data and completely based on the light of the memory chip. The device can be made of CD and DVD material, and greatly improve the computing speed.

The international research team used phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) to store the data, which is the same material as rewritable CDs and DVDs. By using electrical or optical pulses, this material can be made amorphous, like glass or crystalline, like metal. The researchers described the device as a silicon nitride that uses a small fraction of the GST, a waveguide called a waveguide.

Studies have shown that a strong optical pulse sent through the waveguide can critically change the GST state. A strong pulse causes it to melt instantaneously and cool rapidly, giving it an amorphous structure; the slightly stronger pulses cause it to enter the crystalline state. Then, as light of lower intensity is transmitted through the waveguide, the difference in GST state affects how much light is transmitted. The team measured the difference to determine its status and read the existing information at 0 or 1.

The researchers said: "This is the first truly non-volatile integrated optical storage device ever created, and we have achieved long-term retention of data with existing materials that GST can hold for decades."

The research team transmits light of different wavelengths at the same time through waveguides, a wavelength-division multiplexing technique, and they use a single pulse to read and write simultaneously in memory. Professor Penis, of Muenster University in Germany, explains that in theory this means we can read and write thousands of bits of data at a time.

Currently, the team is working on making this new technology available. They are particularly interested in developing a new optoelectronic interconnect that allows memory chips to use light directly with other components instead of electrical signals.

Greenhouse Ventilation Fan

Ventilation is one of the most important components in a successful greenhouse.
If there is no proper ventilation, greenhouses and their growing plants can become prone to problems. The main purposes of ventilation are to regulate the temperature and humidity to the optimal level, and to ensure movement of air and thus prevent build-up of plant pathogens (such as Botrytis cinerea) that prefer still air conditions. Ventilation also ensures a supply of fresh air for photosynthesis and plant respiration, and may enable important pollinators to access the greenhouse crop.
