Radiosonde Observation Chinese Scholars Develop Miniature Carbon Dioxide Detector

[ Instrument R & D of Instrument Network ] In recent years, with the gradual popularization of environmental awareness, when referring to carbon dioxide, many people may quickly think of the greenhouse effect. Indeed, in the matter of global warming, carbon dioxide does not get rid of any relationship. Although the global concentration of carbon dioxide is very small, it only accounts for about 0.041% of the earth's atmosphere. However, it is the gas with such a small concentration that still affects the climate of the entire earth by itself.
In fact, the role of carbon dioxide is not just the greenhouse effect, it also plays a huge role in our daily life and industrial production. Take the greenhouse effect as an example. Although too much carbon dioxide has significantly changed the global climate and environment, it is precisely because of carbon dioxide that we can maintain the temperature on the earth within a stable range, allowing us to survive and proliferate . Moreover, these greenhouse gases similar to carbon dioxide intercept most of the radiation from the sun and protect us from harm. Similarly, carbon dioxide is a very important raw material for production and application in the fields of electronics industry, biomedicine, food production and storage sterilization.
But even with its wide range of uses and many advantages, it still cannot offset the negative impact of the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide. Rising temperatures and sea levels, melting glaciers, destruction of the ozone layer, and the disappearance of species are all forcing us to take actions to understand, monitor, and control the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to slow or eliminate These changes.
Recently, according to the Science and Technology Daily, researchers from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and other units have successfully developed a low-cost miniaturized carbon dioxide monitor based on non-dispersive infrared technology. It is understood that the miniature carbon dioxide monitor has the characteristics of small size and light weight, and is easy to use. At first glance, it seems to be no different from other types of portable carbon dioxide monitors, but in fact, the micro carbon dioxide monitor not only has high monitoring accuracy, but also can be carried on various types of sounding equipment for vertical observation of carbon dioxide gas.
In order to test the accuracy of the miniature carbon dioxide monitor, researchers at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences collected gas samples at different heights and used gas chromatography for comparative measurement and analysis in the experiment. The results show that the vertical profile of carbon dioxide analyzed by the micro-monitor and the gas chromatograph is very consistent. The researchers conducted a continuous observation for a week, and they found that the carbon dioxide concentration will decrease with increasing height from the ground, and in the boundary layer, the vertical distribution of carbon dioxide concentration is mainly affected by the boundary layer stability and emission sources.
The researchers mounted a miniature carbon dioxide monitor on the moored steamboat and successfully carried out in-situ observations on the vertical distribution of carbon dioxide in the boundary layer (0–1000 meters) of the southwestern area of Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province. The researchers said that they will continue to use the low-cost and high-precision advantages of the instrument to form a high-density observation network in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region to observe the changes of urban carbon dioxide in different time and space, which will contribute to China's carbon emission reduction and low carbon development Provide scientific data for policy development.
In order to cope with global warming, scientists are working day and night to continuously develop more instruments and equipment to help us better observe carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. However, monitoring instruments are only tools to help us understand the level of carbon dioxide emissions. To truly change the status quo, we need everyone involved on the planet to participate.
