Shipowners are supported by the Norwegian Classification Society at all stages of decision-making in order to prepare for the implementation of the IMO Emissions Regulations in 2015. There are currently three technical solutions to meet the requirements of the emission control zone: installing an exhaust gas cleaning device, switching to low-sulfur fuel or using LNG. Other alternative fuels are also being developed, such as methanol and biofuels.
Gerd-Michael Würsig, manager of the LNG fuel ship business of the Norwegian Classification Society, said: "Each option has its limitations. Although LNG is an ideal choice, shipowners may be hesitant because of the high cost of investment, and “LNG ready†can provide them with an alternative.
