LNG technology heralds the arrival of a new era of shipbuilding

The Norwegian Classification Society helps shipowners prepare for the use of LNG fuel by providing “LNG ready” certified design services. This service allows shipowners to make informed choices and minimize investment costs.
Shipowners are supported by the Norwegian Classification Society at all stages of decision-making in order to prepare for the implementation of the IMO Emissions Regulations in 2015. There are currently three technical solutions to meet the requirements of the emission control zone: installing an exhaust gas cleaning device, switching to low-sulfur fuel or using LNG. Other alternative fuels are also being developed, such as methanol and biofuels.
Gerd-Michael Würsig, manager of the LNG fuel ship business of the Norwegian Classification Society, said: "Each option has its limitations. If some technologies are relatively immature, fuel prices will play a leading role in the market, thus making the specific period specific. The choice of the program has become more difficult. As the minimum investment may lead to the largest cost in the long run, many shipowners are still holding a wait-and-see attitude."
He said that the Norwegian Classification Society believes that LNG is an ideal choice because it can meet the emission requirements of sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides at the same time, but the specific choice will depend on the shipowner's time, and the wrong technology choice will be This will result in a significant increase in operating costs during the ship's life cycle.
Martin Wold, project manager of the Norwegian Classification Society “LNG ready”, said: “Before choosing LNG fuel, shipowners must consider the following questions: Can LNG fuel reduce operating costs? Under what circumstances can it be reduced? Its feasibility and practicality How? We recommend that customers adopt a phased approach. The Norwegian Classification Society is willing to help customers get answers to these questions at the initial stage. Once the customer has determined the economic and technical feasibility and decided to continue, we can provide more details. Technical Services."
Although LNG is an ideal choice, shipowners may be hesitant because of the high cost of investment, and “LNG ready” can provide them with an alternative.
Torill Grimstad Osberg, Manager of the LNG, Cargo Handling and Piping Systems Department of the Norwegian Classification Society, said: "In order to help the shipowners prepare for LNG fuel in advance, the Norwegian Classification Society reviews the conceptual design and compliance by means of principle approval. This minimizes design risk and ensures system development security from the source."
The Norwegian Classification Society has provided “LNG ready” services to a number of customers who are preparing to use LNG fuel in 2015.
