Multi-million-ton Aromatic Unit Starts

One of the major aromatics projects of PetroChina Urumqi Petrochemical Company, a 1 million-ton/year paraxylene aromatics unit, was formally started in Urumqi on May 1. According to reports, this project with a total investment of 3.86 billion yuan will become the largest multi-million-ton aromatics unit of the same type in the world and will have an annual sales income of more than 15 billion yuan.

Aromatic hydrocarbons are the main raw materials for the production of five new general-purpose engineering plastics such as polyamide, polycarbonate, polyacetal, polyester, and polyphenylene ether. Urumqi Petrochemical Company's 1 million tons/year paraxylene aromatics unit project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission on May 19, 2006, and was launched in September 2007. It is expected to be completed and put into operation on September 30, 2009.

After the project is completed, it will be matched with the 10 million-ton/year oil refinery base of Dushanzi, which is a subsidiary of PetroChina, and will implement mutual supply of raw materials to achieve resource sharing and complementary advantages. The construction of a 1 million-ton/year paraxylene aromatics unit will further provide a broad space for the development of related industries in Xinjiang.

According to the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” of Xinjiang, by 2010, the country’s largest oil and natural gas production base and the national energy land safety major channel will be built; the four major forces of Dushanzi-Karamay, Urumqi, South Xinjiang, and Turpan-Hami will be established with great concentration. The petrochemical base will form a modern-scale petrochemical industrial cluster as soon as possible and build Xinjiang into an important petrochemical base in the western region.
